Coffered Ceilings- What, Why and How to Create

WHAT IS A COFFERED CEILING?

A coffered ceiling is created by recessing sections of a ceiling, in a series of grids. This creates a geometric pattern which can be a beautiful asset to any home.

Traditionally, coffered ceilings were used to disguise architectural engineering; by incorporating beams that were structurally necessary into the design. Over the years, coffers have become more decorative because of their elegant and luxurious aesthetic.

WHY INTRODUCE INTO YOUR HOME?

Coffered ceilings are beautiful additions to all homes for a variety of reasons, outlined below:

• They can make rooms with high ceilings feel homey instead of cavernous.
• They divide and define spaces without the need for walls or doors: helping to keep living spaces open plan.
• They make ceilings an asset! The geometric pattern is dramatic, and by adding paint to the coffers can make your ceiling stand out further.
• Different varieties and styles of coffered ceiling are available, to fit any style of home: contemporary, traditional, or modern.
• They can introduce light into a dark room. Natural light can be achieved through skylights in between coffers. Artificial lighting can be added by choosing moulding with embedded light features.
• They can improve the acoustics of a room. They can help to minimise or project sound depending on their design.

HOW TO CREATE A COFFERED CEILING?

There are two methods of creating a coffered ceiling:
1. place a crossbeam framework on the ceiling
2. remove sections of the ceiling, to create sunken areas.

Method one is the most widely used because it is simpler, requires no excavation, and allows you to be more flexible with the design. Below is a simple guide on how to create a polystyrene coffered ceiling...
1. Carefully plan your design, then measure and mark this on the ceiling with a pencil. This will allow you to see how the pattern fits the room and will ensure you accurately attach the moulding in the correct place.
2. Cover markings with a strong glue adhesive.
3. Carefully attach each moulding to the ceiling; cleaning away excess adhesive afterwards.

WHY CHOOSE POLYSTYRENE COFFERED CEILING?

Polystyrene moulding is extremely lightweight putting less strain on ceilings, it is so lightweight you do not need to worry about the location or direction of your ceiling joists. It is also waterproof, so is perfect for rooms such as kitchens or bathrooms where water exposure is high. It is easy to install and is much safer and simpler to install. Polystyrene mouldings are the perfect decorative addition for any home!
